If you are interested in creating your own interactive video, serious game or branching scenario there are several free and open-source tools, as well as paid tools that are available. In the lesson that follows, I will review 3 open-source tools, and provide examples of how they were used e-learning content. Part 1 of these lessons will focus on H5P.

H5P

H5P is a free feature-rich tool that allows anyone to create, share and reuse HTML5 content and applications. The tool comes with a free HTML5-based interactive video content type, which allows users to add a variety of interactive elements to videos (including assessment questions, pop-up text) using only web browser. In addition to the interactive video content type, H5P also offers a branching-scenario content type that’s currently in the ‘beta.’ This content type allows users to create HTML5 based branching scenarios featuring “dilemmas, self paced learning scenarios and other types of adaptive learning” (Branching Scenario (beta) – H5p.org, 2014).

Example: Skills Practice: A Home Visit Simulation Game

The example presented is an award-winning branching scenario simulation game featuring an interactive story type branching scenario. The game was developed by Ryerson University Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Centennial College & George Brown College Sally Horsfall Eaton School of Nursing, in Toronto.

Learners are presented with a case file of a client named Irina, who they will have to pay a home visit.

After watching the video scenario, learners are presented with a question and they must select the option they think is best. The approach uses the 3C’s of branching scenarios (challenge, choices, and consequences) mentioned in Lesson 7 – Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS)Techniques, allowing the learners to ultimately determine how the story progresses.
