Godot Engine

In this lesson, we will focus on Godot Engine. Godot is a free and open-source game engine released under the MIT license. It allows users to create 2D, 3D and cross-platform games. Features include a ‘flexible scene system,’ ‘visual editor,’ ‘friendly content creation pipeline,’ ‘persistent live editing, and ‘multi-platform deployment’ (Godot Engine, 2020).

Developed in 2017 by a team of first semester students at the S4G School for Games in Germany. The game allows the learner to take on the role of Leuko and Lympho – two white blood cells, who fight viruses to stop infections from spreading in the human body.

When playing the game, users can switch between the characters of Leuko and Lympho, as they travel through curvy arteries and the fight virus invaders.

Conclusion

As we’ve seen from the discussion of digital storytelling and interactive storytelling (IDS), there are clear benefits to be gained from the use of these strategies in learning environments. There is no doubt also that further developments in the field will also continue to influence how digital and interactive stories are integrated into both classroom and online learning environments. There will consequently be a need for a deeper understanding of the underlying factors that contribute to the success of digital and interactive digital stories in learning environments.
